@peterm - yes, I invariably need to check a number of the words in Chambers, and I'm not averse to resorting to lists of possible solutions if I just can't get a 'handle' on a particular clue. What I most wanted to emphasise for those new or newish to PD puzzles was that while in a normal cryptic crossword Azed will try to misdirect the solver wherever he can, in a PD the only misdirection allowable is through the 'reading' of the devilled version, as in the example that Azed uses for PESTO ('vaulting' being used in different senses, but still an essential part of the undevilled version). Everything that appears in the clue is intended to help the solver and not to hinder them, though many of the longer solutions are typically well-nigh impossible to deduce without the help of a few checked letters.
