thanks, sam. Answers were right but cleverly concealed. That first letter of 27 still eludes. It can only be a few words! Still not sure how the first two letters of 21 dn fit it - unless there's an error in the clue

In 21dn, the answer slots into "noting", to form 3 elements.

of course, peterm - I was looking at the wrong end of it. Can you provide a nudge towrds 27 dn? I have the final 3 letters but simply can't see the insert. Very challenging exercise this and has taken me far too long!

Stick with it, aspria! In the undevilled version of 27dn, the final word changes into 2 elements but the word to be inserted goes elsewhere.

I've been plodding through this between game drives at a safari camp in South Africa (tough gig, but someone has to do it!!). Ground to a halt in the NW corner. Any steers for 1, 14 and 22 across or 2 and 4 down would be very welcome. For 22 across I have E??G?T and can't get anything to fit (apart from an obscure legal term that doesn't seem to help with 2 and 3 down) but these crossing letters do look solid.

22ac is what you say it is. 1ac might be translated as "stations" ; 2dn as "letter-writer". You might come across 4dn in an antique shop and 14 across on a beach.

Thank you Barretter. Just what I needed! All I have to do now is to work out the first letter of 12 across!
