40A Instrument son played for people once (6) ???O?S / assume it's SPOONS with SON plus SPO but not seeing the wordplay

I agree with Mattrom & Elle re Saxons.
Just a minor point : I don't see why on = played .
I think "played" is the anagram indicator for "sons" which becomes "ons"
I am happpy to be corrected though.

The only snag with that reasoning, JG, is that the clue, as given, says "son" and not "sonS"?
Bradford gives "on" for "played".
Perhaps Mattrom will look in and say what she had in mind.
