I'm with jazzgirl - I think 'played' just means to scramble the 'son' in the clue.

Hi girls, I took the end of 40a to be an anagram of 'son', as well.

Re 36d. - I notice that Bradford's gives 'man' as a synonym of 'cairn' and vice-versa. Does anyone know what is the connection?

Mattrom, Cairn is listed (in Chambers) under Man- but not vice versa.

Yes, I was being lazy, Malone. "Cairn" is listed under ''Man(kind), Manly, Manliness"
