I think the '17' unclued lights is because it is now 2017, but I agree the justification for '10' is obscure.

By the way, I agree that 'still' is probably correct for 50D, because a still does produce spirit, whereas 'ale' (which I had earlier plumped for) is not a spirit.

I too cannot see a topical theme. I think last year's theme was 9 and two years ago 8. Maybe that's what MCC means by interest, though it is hardly compound!
