Struggling with the awful corner too. I had dimes at 54a but agree times is better. However... I can't spot the other place for dime, presuming you are thinking 66d or 67a. I have neon for 67a (atomic no 10) which makes 67d _O_E. Clarification anyone?? I'll never moan about Myops again!!

Ah. I had DIME for 66D and NAIL for 67D (tenpenny nail). However maybe that is too obscure even for Mr Myops. If NEON is correct that makes 67D _O_E.

Think the x idea is probably right, tying up 47a, 54a and 66d. Thank you Arran and Stevie. Not 100% satisfactory though feel we are just guessing at the answers.

Another thing I don't get is the reference to 'annual compound interest' in the preamble. And what's topical about ten anyway?? Can anyone enlighten me? Is the fact there are 17 clue-less answers meant to be relevant to 2017?
