The connection appears to be 'ten', though somewhat tenuous in some answers.

Every year I have a grumble to myself about this puzzle. Unlike Myops's Christmas one (excellent in every way) it's never symmetrical and the grid is dreadful. The SW corner is linked by only one down light and contains no fewer than three thematic lights, which are effectively unched. I too struggled with DIMES/TIMES, each of which of course works, and the suggestion that DIME appears elsewhere (in the poor corner) leads me to think that TIMES and therefore STALE are correct. Why MCC can't construct a better grid I can't think. Pity the green bottles aren't there, especially today.
