The name isn't the obvious one. The location isn't too tricky once you have that.

What is obvious to one person isn't always so to another. The name is Wellesley (obvious or not?) but that doesn't suggest a location to me. I was wondering whether the title was a clue - plunder becoming place-under.

The fedora reminder is useful. Pointer has a habit of this kind of thing. What a good thing there isn't a statue of the obvious bloke in Oslo!

Tomsdad, I wasn't being unhelpful earlier when I didn't respond to the mention of fedora - I thought you'd suddenly realise what was happening in this puzzle!

I am now more confused after reading these posts.

Since we have named the names:

1. You get Wellesley from the polygon.
2. Since you erase the other double letters, the German helper's name that runs diagonally loses three letters.
3. The 10 letter title of the Duke is within the polygon. I thought
4. I don't know what the Fedora hint means. Lid and hence Leeds?

3 should have read: I thought that was the location of statue.

Forget about the duke. The name is not Wellesley. Thanks to malone for the hints earlier. I am all finished now. Fedora is a reference to a crossword last year where the obvious answer was incorrect.

I think the hero is the German guy whose name starts with B.
