The obvious hero stands out so clearly and the location so obscurely that I cannot help wondering if this is another misdirection a la fedora. However I cannot see the alternative!

Tomsdad, look again!

Any hints?

I've had no luck with the location, christamac, even though a few places appear as answers (though I suspect the solution straddles two or more answers, such as the German town in the top row).

Check the double letters, two letters in a cell, again.

The name that stands out clearly is W's family name. Are you saying there is another name in there?

I was trying to avoid saying it too clearly! This was a very clever crossword.

I've looked again at the discarded letters, and they do not suggest a location. Besides, it says that it is in adjoining cells.

Orson, NOT for a location... That comes later.

I was also trying to be not too clear. If the name from the double letters is the obvious one I was referring to then that still leaves the problem of the location, which is where any hints would be appreciated.
