34a is an anagram of factual with ctu removed (ridiculous cut) and j. It has to be thematically adjusted before entry.
38a is a word meaning wax around PE (extremes of pressure). Definition is strip down and must be similarly adjusted before entry.

Thanks shellraine. Got 34a now (never heard of that one!) and working on 38a. Even though I haven't got all the down missing letters i have worked out how to enter the acrosses hence my letters already placed and word lengths

31a Thin prepared base as last contribution to pizza (5) .....my letters seem to imply "reedy" = thin but how would that parse?

Also can't parse 10d if anyone has done this?
(In bridge, avoid playing after smacking one acting like this? (11) I "think" the "M" is the extra letter?)

I found a lot of the clues hard to parse after getting the answers.

31A. Thin = REEDY.

Prepared = READY.

Base = E.

Use this to replace the last the last in pizza (=A).

So, READY becomes REEDY.

10D. OVERBIDDING.

Anagram ("playing") of INBRIDGEAVOID, s(m)acking one.

A= one. Get rid of this before solving anagram.

I'm not familiar with bridge, so the surface reading doesn't mean much to me.
