59a is GREE (lost step) on DS (dal segno), musical term. Took me ages to parse it!

Indeed. 56a also took forever to parse. I think the clue for 48a is pretty awful. Had finished the crossword, done the colouring in before I resolved the "hint". Was held up because I was convinced the discarded letter from 27a was L. Not too convinced about "luds" as a real word.

dryden 7 gem94 - Thought the same but was just happy to finish it promptly this week! Do not see why past tense was used, as 'wear' ie 'have on' would be the normal convention for 'insertion'. But in this case would have thought we needed one of the conventions for 'containment'. - Also as you say 2nd definition in Chambers 'take in' refers to hoax not containment.

Good explanation, Wintonian, and I can see where the coincidence arises. But, this is the first time I can remember when a setter has referred to a first name using an adjective which is not directly the adjective used in Chambers.

And if I said "Stay lucky" or "Stay happy", which would you prefer ? Personally I'll happily be lucky and grumpy...

Just a thought...why "must" the highlighting be done in two different colours? just to make it prettier?

crucifer - can't see any reason re colouring apart from distinguishing phrase from items. Re Luds - would barristers at an appeal with panel of 3 judges address them as my Luds?.... Fortunately have not been up before a high court judge recently.. do barristers still use m'Lud or my Lud?...mind you they still wear wigs....

Afternoon all. I have a grid all of my own doing - a rarity in itself. I have 4 items plus a wobbly one on the left, which I don't understand as it ought to be the straightest of them all!i don't understand the hint even with full words - does it have 31, 32 or maybe more letters? Also perhaps you could give me a letter in what I believe is a 4 letter item? My picture looks like nothing and I am hoping the message will pop out at me!
