Doh. Why does the penny always drop the moment after I post? Ok, I have the picture and the message. Very clever. Still no eye dear on why the left hand item is wobbly or the hint but I do now have 4 extra answers that don't contribute to the items so maybe if I can spot the extra letter in those ..........

I think you have the wrong shape for the arrow! Look again at where the letters occur.

Failing at the last hurdle(s)... sure - completed the grid but for unchecked in 5d - cannot parse or rationalize for any letter?

Like rrrobbo - I've a wobbly one but only three other objects....

and no idea on the message... Oh well - I'll try again next week!

The message is exactly what it says - nothing cryptic or to be worked out.

......... Sorry, I was assuming by message you were referring to the hint from the extra letters. If it is the 23 cell message you mean, then it is to be found as it appears in the scene which is the puzzle theme.

Unclued, maybe I am being dense but I don't understand the shape I have to draw through the five leftmost letters. Are these the first two of 39ac, the second and third of 31ac and the fifth of 28ac? I had expected a straight line! Thanks

Hi, orientfan, if you start in the bottom left hand corner of the first cell of 39a (sixth cell of 1d), and aim for the middle of the right-hand side of the last cell of 28a, you will draw a straight line that hits the middle of the object made up of the last three letters of 5d, just as it did historically. This line passes through all five of the relevant cells for the leftmost object. You will have to embellish the ends of the straight line appropriately. The slope of this line is quite close to the slope of the original object in the historical depiction.

Thanks wintonian. Had the right letters, hadn't grasped the methodology!

Yes. That method was just dawning on me, but nice to have it confirmed. Finally then, the hint for completeness. Just how many letters are in it? I have 6277424.......and I am assuming we somehow end up with a very relevant numeric. Pretty sure I am missing some though.

Hi, rrrobbo, The extra letters in the clues give three words (6,2,7) in the across clues and four words (7,6,2,4) in the down clues, which should be read as a single phrase. In total, there are 31 across clues and 35 down clues. There are 32 clues with extra letters and 34 clues without extra letters. Although there are only 25 cells used in the six objects in the grid, some of these cells are in both across and down clues. I’ve checked that the grid entries for all 34 of the clues without extra letters contain at least one of the 25 cells, and none of these cells is contained in any of the entries for the 32 clues with extra letters.
