It's the simple ones that get me!
Pattern: just four letters _ E_R
Clue:
Big name ingredient in custard.
Now it could be "peer" as in big name but then I don't get the custard reference
; or is it "fear" being ingredient in custard as in cowardy custard, but that leaves me wondering about the big name?

Ideas anyone?

Hi chrisg, perhaps something even stronger :)

The "E" may be wrong as you suggest, ...making "star" the obvious solution, but I also came up with "mega" (big) as in girl's name =Meg and "a" being a singular ingredient in "custard".
The clue is specifically singular.

That would of course mean I have the "R" wrong.
At present I'm leaning towards "star", but shouldn't the clue then read "ingredientS"?

What was the clue giving you the "e"?
