Murky - read postigod's post again. Type each row and column and do something to it on the calculator!

I did that as soon I finished the grid. That was the obvious thing to do and is one of the two features I mentioned. But some people seem to be suggesting there's something more. I'm now beginning to think there is nothing more to it, and that I saw immediately what some people discovered belatedly.

This is where crossword forums can be very dangerous areas to visit. Some innocent posts on the other forum led me to think I was missing something, so I spent some time trying to see what I was missing. Now I realize they are the ones who missed something first time round that had not escaped me.

In the paper version of 4399, surely there are two mistakes. 27ac would equate to a five figure number as is, whereby adding two sets of parentheses would be correct. Similarly 38ac should have three sets of them, not one. I have to say, that held me up for quite a while. Otherwise a nice little puzzle.

Murky,

For your solution, can you see the relevance of the word "time" in the title?

This is the word that is bugging me.

I congratulate everyone on getting the grid filled so quickly. Am I the only person still struggling to get started? Usually there is a point where one can make an entry but so far I have been unable to find it. A hint would be more than welcome.

1a only 6 choices....... combine with 1d (and finding X) cuts down the choices.......then 18a
After1d you should now have J and the 1st digit of K ... again not many choices for K. 44d ... means that 19d must start with 1... and can then only be 14,15,18,or 19.
J,K then you will have L
I actually worked out quite a lot of A B C J K L P Q R X Y Z (some had a few possiblities, but when you use them for the actual clues , they soon whittle down)

Hope this helps....if not ask again...

There are only four possible sets of triples that fit all the criteria in the instructions. Once you have these all you need is to work out which is ABC, JKL, PQR or XYZ. 29 across and 30 down can help starting to work these out.
As regards the end game I can see that the two columns and rows all have a simple connection but also have a deeper one BUT there is no change in the submitted grid either way

Everyone here and elsewhere seems to be saying how simple this puzzle is but I don't think so. A lot of deduction and staring at numbers is involved, plus a knowledge of how square numbers work. I found a spreadsheet with all the square numbers on it useful as well as a list of prime numbers. And, xij, there are no mistakes in the clues - extra brackets are unnecessary.

I've finished it but I too am baffled by the ungrammatical title. And there seems to be no logic to the lettering. Why is one set A, B, C and not J, K, L? And Why those letters and not D, E, F etc?
