Straightforward enough clues; got the grid filled; found the light to be rubbed out; found what is partly forbidden (ha, ha!) but ground to a halt then. Does that which is forbidden have any relevance to what goes in the two grey columns? "Appropriate symbolism" would imply that something other than 2 letters goes in the 2 cells in each line. Yet another puzzle where the end-play takes more time than it should. The irregular capitalization in the title must mean something, but what?

Look at the letters originally in the shaded columns, what did she turn into when she looked back at the removed grid entry?

Fill in the shaded columns with chemical symbols similar to what's partly foRbIdden, to make real words.

The preamble is misleading when it says that "all entries in the initial and submission grids are real words". The submitted downs in the shaded area are not real words, although the acrosses are. Or am I missing something?

Full grid except for 28a Police chief remaining without a word of approval (5) ??ING
Don't understand the end game - are the original letters discarded and a two letter periodic table element symbol inserted?
Some of the across answers don't work with any elements and some work with more than one.
I'm missing something, but what?

Hi crackabilly, police as in the "pop" group. Yes the original 8 lletters [a person (4,4)] are discarded for compounds known as (????s), (which the person above was turned into singular), with a symbol for a Chemical Element in each: some denoted using 1 letter, others 2. As the preamble doesn't state they have to be unique, I used the same compound 3 times.
Hope helps this.
