I must be a bit thick here cos I can't see what fits into some of the acrosses.....
18a I have BO??IDES and symbols for caesium/lithium/potassium don't make a real word?
similarly for most of the other acrosses... ?

For 23a K would make a 4 letter word .... is the other cell left blank?

Hi kirky, 18a Na + F, (Sodium Fluoride) gives Bona Fides. K on its own is not a (????) which, a pillar of, the original (4,4) was turned into.
In the 2nd column if you concentrate on the Halides in the Periodic Table it should help.

For any pedant Chemists I should have said Halogens with the compounds they form being Halides.

Just need some help to finish with these please:

30ad Zip fold not closed at the top (4) O?EN .... looks like open??

37a They might make better soap with money for cast (7) ME?D?RS
assume answer is menders (they might make better) . Where does the single letter misprint of an "E" fit in the wordplay?

1d Well known vesicant primarily displacing marks of skin disease (6)
FA?O?S must be FAMOUS(well known) but how does the word play work?

Hi xwordfan,
30 zip = nothing, 0 + pen = fold.
37 EastEnders=> Menders (m for East (from cast).
1 Famous => Favous (of skin disease), marks m => v (vesicant primarily).
