Nelson - 1d is a derogatory Canadian term given to people from Newfoundland. 1ac is thematic as are 20ac, 24ac, 41ac, 5d, 7d, 9d, 26d, 28d and 33d. Their solutions are then anagrammed according to broken down segments of the 'paragraph' in the preamble. All resulting words are proper names that have something in common.

Sorry, a typo. Not 24ac but 34ac

1a is SHUNTER with the S omitted in wordplay (which is actually a second definition). There were actually a couple of double definition clues with faulty 'wordplay' !
