I have anagrammed my 5d answer which seems to fit "died before noon in ocean", so 19a starts ta (sharp taste). Now stuck on 1a and 1d.

Note that there are numbered clues for all entries, yet the preamble gives wordplay for ten more entries. I am finding that the preamble wordplay answers replace some of the clued answers in the grid.

The ten entries are all thematic anagrams, although most are pretty obscure though.....and the additional/missing/correct letters are a beast to work out ! Definitely the most difficult this year so far.

English or not, it's actually quite a famous one.....at least I knew it, unlike some other quotations in previous IQs.

Phew, at times this has been quite obscure. I need a pointer to 28d. Irritate man with red. ?e?g?l. This may be a thematic answer.

Marca it is thematic. Real answer is a "rod man" and the anagram of that is ?e?g?l. Hope this helps

1a is thematic. The clue refers to a type of watch, rather than to look at. 1d the definition has a letter change to d. It is a derogatory Canadian word. Hope this helps.
