Having got as far as you obviously have, I can only imagine you have not exploring all the 'a' options, your 'P' must surely be correct.

Hope that helps.

Hello I am new to the forum. I cannot do listener word based crosswords but always look at the number ones when they appear in the Saturday Times. I am delighted to have found values for all the letters except K and k. The second part is totally out of my league!

tryotherone: if you really have all the other letters then you know 25ac and 13dn and 20ac and 24ac. This narrows 18dn since you know the 2nd and 3rd digit for sure and know that the 1st digit is one of two possibilities. This means k^2 is one of two values, only one of which is a perfect square. This gives you k. That gives you two possibilities for K, only one of which is compatible with 12ac.

Or you can start with 12ac since you know the 1st and 3rd digit. Since you now it is > 17dn, you can infer there are only two integral values for K = (12ac - D)/R and then deduce k.

Thanks to those who gave a few nudges, allowing me to complete the first grid. Now I am stumped again. The message (which seems to me to be a complete instruction, not really two parts) becomes obfuscating saying where we should start. The obvious 3 digit number doesn't produce numbers fitting in with the remaining circled cells in any way. So where does it start?

Escuan, how does the 2-digit number relate to the number of lights in the grid ?

I am almost done with this, but have just realised that in the final stage I have 5 entries to make, and with several options available, they will not lead to a unique solution. Clearly I have overlooked something. Has anyone experienced this, or a hint about what I may have overlooked ?
