Prospero: for 27 (also very obscure!), broaden your thinking for the meaning of "something silvery-white on the table" and insert a theme word.

I entered an incorrect (but plausible to me) answer at 3D and this led on to another wrong answer at 1A which parsed reasonably well but left a dodgy definition...wondering if you might have fallen into the same trap peterm?

Well I have an order and the inside is a theme word ... but the outside I only know as a gas ... I await epiphany. And thank you peterm - I had already got there!

Oh, that sort of table, I see now - back to Primo Levi

Thanks ixion, but I'm reasonably confident about my 3dn: a 4 letter word for "way" with "time" removed to give a word of contempt. I'm ok (I think) with the definition for 1ac, but I can't properly see the wordplay. Can you give a nudge on where "turning" fits in?

You turn the first 2 letters of see and put it round a word for top

Where in the wordplay does it indicate you turn the first 2 letters?

I don't know if I'm being unusually thick here, but I can't for the life of me see how "turning head, see" can be interpreted as turn the first 2 letters of the word "see".

This was the fastest I have ever got the theme, and I almost finished it pretty quickly. 7D was a big problem, as it doesn't appear to be a word in Chambers or anywhere sensible. Are there any hints, please, for the last one for me, 11A?
