I have always understood that "brut" applies to any sparkling wine, not just Champagne

That's true, jazzy, but not to red and white wines otherwise (by "champagne" I meant sparkling wines in general).
And malone: my 1960 Concise OED also says simply wine, but I assure you , there is no such thing as a "brut" red or white wine other than the "sparkling" variety. The French Hachette & Larousse dictionaries say specifically champagne only --- unless of course the British have taken the word over for general use, which I can't really imagine.

Bonjour GK
Thanks for clarifying .
I am sure you will agree that a sparkling wine should only be called Champagne if it comes from the region of Champagne, France

In other words, all Champagne is sparkling wine,
but not all sparkling wine is Champagne :)

GK, I'm glad you relaxed your ' "Brut" is actually only used to qualify champagne...' stance!
I don't know if I'd say that 'the British have taken the word [Brut] over for general use', but I know that the word can be used, legally, on wines from England, Spain, Italy...
