from Daily Mail 18/1/16:
'Agitate and tumble dry fabric' (7)

The answer is 'perturb'. I get the 'agitate', but where does the rest fit in?

Tumble= reverse.
Brut is dry
Rep is a fabric

rep is fabric
brut is dry
tumble anagram indicator

OK, I get it (sort of) but I still don't know why 'brut' should be 'dry' and 'rep' should be a fabric. Is it just one of those crossword things, like 'writer' is 'me' (amongst other things!)?

rep or repp is a type of corded cloth
brut usually connected with wines means unsweetened/dry

Brut is French for 'unsweetened, dry(of wines)' and it's been used in crosswords quite often.
Rep is a fabric in the same way as cotton is a fabric - it's just one that you don't hear of very often!

Just a P.S.: "brut" is actually only used to qualify chamapagne, and means drier than dry ("sec" in French) --- Santé!
