There appears to be an anomaly with the online version of this puzzle.

My father printed it late on Friday evening and on his copy the 17th clue reads...
"Character of old Noah's son"

I printed my copy around lunchtime today and my clue reads...
"Character of old Adam's son"

I am sure the later version is correct having solved the clue - but the first will be unsolvable.

I hope this helps any of you ultra keen Friday Nighters amongst our number.

Also would be interested to hear what is in the printed version should anyone still be traditional enough to pop out and buy a newspaper.

75% clues solved - but working too so I have my excuse.

Not looked at the grid yet, but pretty sure of 1a and 1d.

Bit early for hints!

The newspaper says Noah, the original online said Noah, but has since been corrected to Adam

It appears someone made a boo-boo!

Those of you with the Noah version should now find it a little easier

As I don't want to support Rupert Murdoch any more than I have to, I buy The Times on Saturday only. It's not the paper it was before he took over. Only 50% of clues solved so far, not including the old Adam!

Barretter, if you've got a Waitrose near you, the Times and a cup of coffee are free if you spend £10. I get in for opening time at 8 to get the reduced stuff, get my paper and coffee and toast the blessed Rupert in the knowledge that I've (slightly) reduced his profits.

Be careful with the endgame here as there's room for interpretation.

The Noah version can give the same answer; I assumed that the use of 'of' in the clue legitimated taking just 3 of 7 letters from a name...but it's nice to finally reconcile all the extra letters.

I think probably unicode is required for the last step, if that's not giving too much away...

Meursault surely "character of old" is the definition, since the word is obsolete, so Noah's son has to stand on its own. It has to be Adam's!

Yes, Escuan. The mind compensates for errors in the clue...

Caphrist, no Waitroses in my vicinity and I suspect I wouldn't care for their coffee as only the finest espresso known to man (to paraphrase "Withnail and I") is good enough for my palate!
