Pagans is the definition.

The world play requires a courteous man, and cajoles (with a missing letter)

Any more help just ask...

I know that feeling so well.

Sometimes you can stare so much that the obvious becomes invisible.

Too much faith in myself have no idea what 1a is. A clue similar to the last one would be great if you would be so kind!

I struggled with this one for some time...

The definition is an American spelling of a particular breed of a common bird, with a letter missing.

The word play begins with an abbreviation for 'grains' followed by a type of cockatoo, 'mostly' and 'returning'

The cockatoo is an Australian one. Google might help. The reason the entire word is not in Chambers is that they list it in an entry for an alternative spelling of a boring colour.
I find myself in the irritating position of having a full grid and having found 19 of the twenty extra down letters, but I cannot parse 22down so I don't yet know what its extra letter is. Any hints most welcome.

I too struggled to parse this one, but it is all there.

Showering is the definition

You are looking for a word which means getting rid of impurities, and has an extra letter, and another letter changed to the 'second of gels'.

If you want any more just shout.

It just occurred to me (this often happens just after I post) that the original word is refining, that "f" is the extra letter and that the "e" is replaced by "a" which presumably can mean "before" - that page of my tatty Chambers is missing. Must buy the 2014 edition. Thanks Saddleworthian.
