Hello everyone.
Is 7A one of the six special clues?

Yes, Nelson.

Jogamel, I'm not bothering to make up the cube and I haven't even solved all those face-to-face clues. A 2x2x2 cube will have eight letters so I've gone for an obvious 8-letter word appropriate to the theme and the six inserts.

Got it, and finished the grid.
Can't do the endgame though.
Jogamel, hope you're still above water.

Nelson, Orson and I (and maybe Kobnut) didn't persevere to the bitter end of the process. I think the 'single word' is just sitting waiting for you. You have six things, added - what would constitute a seventh?

Head above water - just. Hope no more rising river. Still not got word to write under grid but have guessed. We are near the Aire, the Ribble and the Wharfe here....think of us

Thanks malone. Yes, I think I can figure out the word. But not quite happy.
Also, I don't see that the silver cells are an "anagram" of the theme. Jumbled letters of the theme maybe, but anagram?

Jogamel, I live on the edge of the Mersey Valley. The river is about half a mile away, but I'm more worried about the little brook and pond a hundred yards away from my front door.

I'm not someone who takes water with his whiskey, so I'm taking the bottle to bed - just in case.

I am not happy with the description of the grids. If they form the sides of an alphabetical "rubrik's cube" and each individual cube is associated with only one letter, as described, surely the edges of the grids should match up? Otherwise what are we looking at?

I have finished the main crossword but have only managed a couple of the face-to-face answers so far. However I can make an educated guess at the 8 letter word.

Tomsdad, I agree. The more I look at it the less I understand. A 4x4x4 cube should contain 64 letters, yet the face-to-face clues only generate 32 . Their answers appear to be in alphabetical order which isn't mentioned .

On looking at it again, the word "relevant" is relevant!, ie. only the middle cubes on each face are involved and are single letters. There should be 12 clues, ie. four on each axis, to involve every middle cube, so presumably there are some redundant letters on the faces.

I think it is going to involve some extraordinary spacial perception to visualise the completed cube, or access to a 3D computer program!

Anyway, I am making progress with the face-to-face clues.
