I'm stuck on the second quotation. Can someone please give me the words before 'church' to get me going again. Thanks

If it's the Spectator, I don't think 'church' was in what I had!

Yes it's the Spectator (should have said that!). It's the quotation given by the first letters of the superfluous words. I have 52d as the first letter of 'church'.

???
in 52d the superfluous word is "prison" the P being the last letter of the 4 letter word before it

I had a more seasonal word, also beginning with C. I've no longer got the crossword, so can't check which letters came from where,

I hope I'm not causing any confusion! I knew that 'church' wasn't in the quotation I had, I knew that another word beginning with C did feature - but I can't say where individual letters came from as I no longer have my copy.

A bit of a muddle here. I was thrown of by assuming the word church came into it. Could someone give me the first one or two words of the second quotation derived from the first letters of the superfluous words. Hopefully then I can carry on. Thanks.
ps Is the first letter of 6d a 'B'
