Feel I am being stupid but still not seeing. A nudge either here or to richardellis@hotmail.com would be welcome.

Mark is the definition (quite old-fashioned). The answer can be split into three words which when followed by 'multiplied by five' gives an equation.

Heisenberg, there may be more to it than this, but I think it was through misuse of one-time pads (reusing of pages) by a certain nation that counter-intelligence first became aware of one of the 5. Perhaps there is also a play on the word 'pad', as in someone who walks quietly.

Interesting, thanks.

I wondered if 11a was going to play a part in the endgame through a different interpretation of its third character.

I'm also still finishing off the grid and just can't parse 36ac: YEL-S.

Could be an L or a P - please can someone put me out of my misery?

Thanks
