I had a bad feeling about this when I read the preamble, and my fears seem to have been justified.

Grid done apart from a couple I'm unsure of (12ac and 14ac), but I can't make get anywhere with the endgame. Once we've encoded the symmetrically opposite entries, should something(s) be visible in the grid?

Yes, I think so, Demeter, though I'm at about the same stage as yourself. For 12 I have *AC* and for 14 I have O*ING.
I assume 32 is MWAH, though I can't find it in my 2008 Chambers.

Hi Meursault

Mwah is in my online Chambers

I assumed oping for 14a- ope is poetic for giving voice.

OPING must be right, PING is okay for whistling. Thanks DJA and Unclued.

In 16 how does "passing by" come to mean remove the X from LIMAX to leave LIMA? Also struggling with 27 and 28. Thanks.

6 x 7 = 6 by 7, so 'x' = 'by'? Passing = missing/skipping.

Unclued, for 27 : remove word for band from 'during', follow the 2 letters remaining with 'T' in between the 2-letter code for Seychelles. Makes the first name of a singer from quite a while back.

28 : Mark is the definition. The equation is in the form x is y * 5
