Before you say goodnight to your disheartened aunt? (8)

I've written this to announce some news to my amnesiac gran in the hope it's a little more memorable as she loves cryptic crosswords. I've never solved one before today, nevermind written my own. So, even if it is solvable I'd happily take any pointers to improve it

Does this not work then? Is it not solvable because I've written it wrong or has nobody had a chance to look at it yet?

It's certainly difficult! Is the "your" or the "aunt" disheartened?

had a look earlier and couldn't see the answer (still don't) but that doesn't count for much.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. The aunt is disheartened. I can give the answer so you can help improve the clue or would that take the fun out of it for you guys?

There isn't a definition. Thats why I put the question mark. This is my first encounter with cryptic crosswords so my understanding of then could be completely flawed

Hi tribalsandman
A clue without a definition is unusual. There is a clever type, known as "& lit", where the wordplay and the definition are the same.

Blowing my own trumpet, I did one for the CLUELESS competition this week:

Preparation for combat op? (4,4)
