Could anyone give me a hint as to how the Hole answers are to be modified?

I can't see any pattern there.

Thanks.

I think you may need to wait until you've solved enough of the Holes to see a pattern emerging. They're all cross-checked by Course entries at at least one thematic point, sometimes two ...

Can anyone give the answer to Hole 3 ? I think the possible anagrams are 'oredseat', 'dseatedo', and 'seatedof' but utsire returns nothing for any of these.

If you've got those possibilities you'll know that the answer has to be a plural. Try looking for the singular version - Chambers Anagrams has it, despite not having the plural version.

And it can't be 'seatedof', for that would cause two words to be omitted...

And I looked through the 'deo...' words manually, but missed it. Thanks IonaCarr.

I've done a little research on the game. The first thing I found out is that it's the player with the lowest score who wins a hole, I don't think that Xanthippe pointed that out. The second thing is that Xanthippe's recipe for declaring the result ("So-and-so won x & y") only holds true if a player wins by more than one hole. If a player wins by only one hole, then it seems the correct terminolgy is : "So-and-so won by 1." - they don't say how many holes there are to play, because it's obviously 0.

The other thing that puzzles me is that the player with the 'honour' of playing first only seems (if my own calculations are correct) to win 0.11* of holes, and loses 0.611* of the holes, so it appears that this thing they call 'honour' is a poisoned chalice. That is unless, the player with the 'honour' has the right to invite the other player to go first...
