Thank you Olivercardo; I'm still struggling after several back operations and numerous injections. Still, ever hopeful that things will improve. I have now completed the grid and just have to play the game. At Hole 17 I seem to have two redundant words. Only one fits the phrase that completes the puzzle's title. But the preceding word in the clue also seems to be redundant. It doesn't contribute to the letter jumble or the definition.

Hi Escuan

As far as I could see the only redundant word was eases.

Cell division processes is definition and the jumbled anagram is in (this stem on)

Feeling particularly dense. Finished the grid some time ago but still have no idea how my 18 extra words "contributes to a thematic phrase" -- would some kind soul please give me a prod in the right direction? Many thanks.

puzzled272, you don't really need to understand that bit for a correct solution, but it explains the ellipsis after the title. Consider the sequence of extra words as an acrostic. You should see a well-known quote that begins with the title word.

Many thanks dryden; so I was feeling dense with some considerable justification!

If it's any consolation, I didn't see it either, until M.T. was mentioned at least four times on the site that prides itself on not giving any secrets away.

Dryden, I saw that too. I wasn't that concerned really. But thinking about it - there are two sites which are philosophical opposites : one believes in helping people and the other prohibits it. This is in keeping with things in general, except that the one site that is prohibitive isn't always prohibitive, and the other site that isn't prohibitive attracts criticism from the other site that is prohibitive, I like what OliverCardo writes, he is a mediator, however - since when did the site we are on ban someone from expressing another view (I mean seriously ban, as in having their account blocked) ?

Please could some kind soul give me some help with working out who won each hole?

I cannot see how knowing how many shots are taken in total helps, as I am struggling to find details of matchplay golf rules!

If I go first and get a hole in one, does my opponent get a go at that hole at all? If so, and if he also got a hole in one, would that mean there were two shots taken, and the honours shared?

I simply cannot see how knowing the total number of shots can help know which player took a hole.

E.g. if there were 3 shots, that could be me going first, other player going second and getting a hole in one, and then me going again - but why would I bother going again if the other player had already 'won' the hole? Or in golf does each player have to keep going until they get the ball in the hole before moving onto the next?

I hope this isn't a spoiler - but I have searched and even google isn't helping me.
