Bambi, maybe you've not got the right starting cells. I make it there should be 43, spread throughout the grid, though more in the top half. From the starting position : cell (4,12) - ie the middle cell of 10A - has only one neighbour and therefore dies. Cell (5,11) has 4 live neighbours (including (4,12), which was alive in the starting position), so also dies. Possibly you don't have the correct letters for the 6th word.
After playing the game, there should be 26 live cells, all in the upper half of the grid, in an obvious, meaningful pattern.
