Am still struggling with end game. Are the start points the letters of the 6th word. If so I must be missing something.
With meursaults example I agree 4,12 dies (dead cell surrounded by 4 live cells). However 5,11 is a live cell surrounded by 2 live cells so lives on. Using what I believe the rules are I end up with 22 cells in top half of grid. I am sure I have misinterpreted one of the rules but can't fathom it out. Help appreciated. Thanks

Bambi, maybe you've not got the right starting cells. I make it there should be 43, spread throughout the grid, though more in the top half. From the starting position : cell (4,12) - ie the middle cell of 10A - has only one neighbour and therefore dies. Cell (5,11) has 4 live neighbours (including (4,12), which was alive in the starting position), so also dies. Possibly you don't have the correct letters for the 6th word.

After playing the game, there should be 26 live cells, all in the upper half of the grid, in an obvious, meaningful pattern.

Thanks Meursalt
I had the right starting word. I was looking for the 26 live cells spelling out a message rather than forming a pattern. I had a couple of counting errors which didn't help

The end of my previous comment was ambiguous. The resulting 26 live cells should spell out a word.

I haven't yet had the pleasure of trying to play the game because I can't for the life of me resolve 13ac. Asians? Arians? Please put me out of my misery! Thanks.

Thanks so much sudokulover. I was wrongly treating 'for instance' as part of the definition.
