Can anyone explain the wordplay for 20d., I think it's LIBATIONS with D as the extra letter..

It's OK, I've just seen it.

Unclued, if your live cells appear random after following the process of deaths and births, that's not a good sign. The live cells should spell the name of the game. Remember that the process is not a progressive, or sequential, one, but rather it is applying the rules of deaths and births to a snapshot of the starting point (which was my initial warning). After discussion with Crosswhit, and repeating part of the process I followed on Saturday, I don't think a further iteration of the process is required.

Barretter, for the 4th word of the message, think 'letters'. Look in the grid for all the letters of the 6th word.

Thanks Meursault. Presumably "dead" cells are those which are not part of the 6th word?

Filled the grid, played the game, got the name, but the creator...? Don't you need a 'k'?

Thanks Meursault. I tried again using a table printed from Word blacking out the starting cells. I soon found a relevant word appearing - no great great surprise in what it was!

If I assisted, you're welcome, Unclued, And if it had been preambled properly, it might have been an okay puzzle. My Saturday evening second iteration (no alcohol, no drugs) resulted in a sperm cell. And I thought, how clever is that ? But alas, I had not myself followed the (simultaneous) rules correctly and at a certain point, when something recognisable became apparent, unconsciously stopped checking so rigorously...but my hat would be off to a setter who could achieve that...

Barretter - you'll have to excuse me - I've only just seen your question. Provided you've identified the 6th word correctly, just play the game with what you've got.
