Yes, I redoubled my efforts to solve more down clues. If you're right about the down entries which start in row S (ie there isn't recycling), I can fit 6 out of the 8 now, using UNFATHOMABLE (I've yet to solve the other 2), but in doing so give myself further problems...

I don't have that answer yet, Sussex, am working around that at the moment,; I'm also working around the across AA 10 letter answer.

Sussex - the method for solving requires placing 'converted army's' within a word for 'lodge'. Think carefully about who might own 'digs'!

Despite cold-solving more than half the clues I am nowhere near working out what to do to create a symmetrical grid.

Thinking laterally I've tried to work out what the quotation might be, using two methods:
1. Write out the two sets of index letters and look for possible six-letter sequences - 'who', 'and' and 'you' seem to be in there;
2. Think what might be possible for AN across - surely the word 'I' must occur twice?

There are some identity-related quotations on the internet that partially fit the bill, but if 'word divisions' means the break between words then they can't be used.

I'm particularly unhappy that the lack of a reference to ODQ may mean that the quotation is very obscure indeed.

IonaCarr, I'm in the same place. I assume that the title gives a clue. I variously arranged the x-axis letters into eg 'ASSURE, AND WHO.' Some of the y-axis letters might be rearranged : '...DID YOU SEE...' But all very speculative. I think I have a better chance to form at least part of the grid and give some of the indices a position.

You mentioned a lot of cold-solving, certainly there is - but I think the easy solve for more than half the clues, plus having them in alphabetic sequence of answers, made this a fair challenge.

I'm really struggling with this one. Does anyone know if the quotation is in English? My attempts at grid filling appear to be producing nonsense. Back to the drawing board for me.

I've got AND WHO/ARE YOU/SAID HE/AS SURE/AS I AM I/AND YOU/ARE YOU but can't find a quote or reference anywhere. It might not be the right order either

pkd, the quotation is very obscure, and the first part of it (ie the part given by the seven units of six letters) is not in ODQ, so there's no hope of finding it via the ODQ index using keywords. So the internet is essential, which I thought breached Listener rules.
If you enter into an Advanced Google search the first three groups of letters you have as a quotation you should get the author and work. The work's an 18th Century one by an author with the initials L S (reasonably well known, I think)

Brilliant, found it, thank you Dryden. Now to try and finish it!

Well thank goodness I've got a copy in the house. It's not very fair though, especially since the book shows a further three sets of six letters preceding what PKD has discovered - which I would consider also to be within 'the first part' of the quotation.

At least 'the second part' is now clear, but is it worth the struggle?
