Fair enough farr & stumped - that was why I put ?? in my text. Tide does seem better & didn't realise trow & keel were boats.

On a lighter note a brand new Chambers arrived for me today courtesy of runner up prize in the Sat GK telegraph puzzle!

Congratulations on the prize.
I live in Canada and can only download the Everyman & AZED crosswords from the UK. Is the Sat GK telegraph puzzle you won down-loadable?
ps someone emails me the Spectator.

Farr- Not downloadable unless you are in the Telegraph crossword club - I'm not, but a friend brings me the paper each week so that I can enter the puzzles.
I am in the Times Crossword Club and have had quite a few prizes in the last 7 or 8 years.
I've won speccie or been runner up about 5 times too .
Have you ever won it?

Won the Speccie just once. I like the prize and there's another (AZED or Everyman) which gives book tokens which I can send to friends in the UK as Christmas presents! I don't do the Guardian ones any more because they have books as prizes which don't interest me - rather like not climbing a 2,999 ft hill in Scotland because it's not a Munro.
Have you any idea about the numbers who enter the Speccie?
