"Drive" just gives the last letter, I think.

Could be CD (compact disc) as a drive in old computer,as opposed to a modern DVD drive

I took the C to be part of the figure, oldyalan, with the D for DRIVE (as in an automatic gearbox). You might be right though - although a CD drive plays a CD; the CD isn't a drive in itself.

Quite correct ChrisE, Have you parsed19 down yet? sounds like the leader of the Flock, I think the outgrowth is of the type a Rhino has.

I see what you mean, oldyalan, but there isn't a "sounds like" indicator.

I think this compiler is a bit "loose".

Could you explain the parsing for 15 across First of the month for each berry(7) I have an answer that fits ? U ? I ? E ?
but cannot be sure as the berry I am thinking of It is not a true berry but a cone with unusually fleshy and merged scales, which give it a berry-like appearance.

The first 4 letters are the first day of a month; last 3 "for each". I agree that you are technically correct, but they are referred to as "berries" in cooking.

Thanks Chrise, I now understand the parsing, I agree with your post re 1 down," O " can in no known way represent energy. Still i have completed the x word and found the wordfinder answer so that's the excitement over for another week. Hope Jazzgirl keeps coming on the Rt thread as she will be missed if she gives it up...

Been out; just got back; appreciate the discussion and agree. I think the parsing was clear to the compiler but not really translated to the clues. I never like it when I complete with correct entries but without fully understanding why! I still don't get CD as "drive", nor really the "outgrowth" def. However, still live for another day, so not all bad!
