..............from the pictures I googled it looks rather like Magna Carpa (or MacNacarper, as I understood it was called when I was a child --- my father was a gardener, but I must have been a slow learner). Is there any connection do you think?

Ah you mean Macrocarpa .
Cupressus Leylandii is much more vigorous and unless you have it under control, grows to great heights.

I visited Bodnant, where there are some truly HUGE trees (yes, I know, not nearly as large as those in the US ;-))
Some are labelled champion trees of Great Britain, i.e. the tallest, or widest. One such was an insignificant thing you wouldn't give a second glance to, surrounded by all the splendour. A Sorbus from China.
When a teenager I wouldn't get out of the car when taken to Bodnant. It seemed like a lifetime before anyone reappeared, a lesson well learned.

How peculiar, jazzy: maybe my father was confusing it with Magna Carta. That picture brought back memories of our lawn in my childhood, even if it's not the same tree. Under "Magna Carpa" online I found a weird arty video showing a woman fetching a fish out of a pool, painting it all over & then daubing herself with it. A bit inconclusive, I found. Oh well, little things please little minds etc.

Had no effect on me, rosalind, except revulsion. And all that wasted paint! I presume the fish was dead at the beginning..........

hi Poole boy!
Did you know there is/was an exhibition at Poole Museum of past Lifeboat men? Some of my family are amongst them.
