My favourite along those lines is the Groucho Marx quote:

One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know.

Quoting from the Oxford dictionary grammar section.....
A participle is a word formed as an inflection of the verb, such as arriving or arrived.
A dangling participle is one which is left 'hanging' because , in the grammar of the clause, it does not relate to the noun as it should.

The "dangling" modifiers and participles are under the same grammatical "umbrella" then ? Looking back, we had this discussion on the forum some time ago

"For sale: mahogany table by lady with Chippendale legs" is not an example of a dangling participle.
There is no participle in the sentence (dangling or not)
(It is more along the lines of Chris' joke about Groucho Marx and elephants!)

I've already agreed about my error (see post 15178) but the type of error comes under the same kind of grammatical "umbrella" . I am off to get some fresh air

Why does 5a say "sons" rather than "son"?
The plural to me implies more than one "s"?
And in 9d; should the musical note be spelt "ti" or "te"?
"Te" is required today...but the other spelling of "ti" was what was wanted only the other day?
Now, I cannot parse 6d?
One risking knockout given big drink reported a better roll (7-8)
I have "quarter- finalist" = one risking knockout (definition)
I can see "quart" for "big drink"....but nothing else?

The "roll" will be a "list".
Leaving "erfina".
I am guessing the setter thinks fina sounds like "finer" for better.
We'll give him that.
Leaving "er".
Does er sound like "a"?
"A better roll."
"A finer list"
"Er fina list".
I think the setter is a chancer if that is what his clue means?
What do you reckon?
