Hi, Rusty!
I do not much like Jeremy Paxman.
I find his somewhat abrasive personality rather off putting.
And in episodes of "University Challenge", I think him somewhat condescending?
I have not yet seen next week's schedule of Athletics events.
We haven' t bought our new TV guide.
I have quite a busy week coming up though...I hope what I have organised will not interfere too much with the Athletics!
I have minor things arranged , like the dentist, and then the odd lunch here and there.
Bad timing and planning on my part!!

Hi elle
I bristle every time Paxman (on University Challenge) says "with an average age of xx, let's meet the team". Surely, as an arts graduate, he must realise that he has changed the subject of the sentence half-way through!

Grrrr. I agree Chris .
Paxman is guilty of a "dangling participle" !

Good morning, Elle!
Fine fresh day here!
Snap!
I can't be doing with Jeremy Paxman, too!
A 24 carat pub bore of a man.
But, it is the content of the programmes I am interested in.
TV guide. Can you not look ahead on the Freeview guide?
Sky lets me look 7 days ahead.
Very handy for setting programmes to "record", or add to "planner".
I am heading out at 11.00, but it is Miss O who is collecting me and she is always late. Always!

Good morning, Rusty!
A lovely day here, too, for now......but I am told we can expect rain later!
I have just discovered BB's cagoule hanging behind the door....I hope he isn't going to need it today!
I think he is going to Sports' Club.
I didn't even know there was a Freeview Guide......!
But yes, you are right......I have found it on Google!
(and have saved it in My Favourites )
Where are you and Miss O heading?
Is it for a bacon roll at the Pine Cone?
She may surprise you...and arrive on time?

Hello, Chris!
I did say that J.P was condescending.......I should have added "ungrammatical" as well!

I appreciate your sentiments, Jazzy, although there isn't actually a 'participle' in Chris' quote - "danglin" or otherwise!

Hi Elle,
re the participle, google "Dangling Participle" for more details.
Two examples are:
While camping, I saw a bear wearing my pyjames .
For sale: mahogany table by lady with Chippendale legs.

Hi Jazzy,

Enlighten me please: where is the participle in the 'mahogany table' example?

Sorry, JG, but I do think you are in error.....
Yes, the example you have just given is correct........"camping" in that instance is a "dangling participle", as it does not relate to the main noun.
BUT Chris quoted "With an average age of xx,........"
There is no participle in that phrase.

Hello, Elle!
No, I meant an "on-screen" programme guide?
Explore your remote control, or ask your daughter!
It may be called an "EPG".
A "something programme guide"?
Yes, I think we will go to Pine Cone, for a change!
The girls seem to prefer a cheese and ham toastie there, now.

"Having an average of ...."would fit then ?
The example of the mahogany table was from a grammar lesson long ago, where the subject of the sentence was "modified". The Americans don't use the word "participle" but "modifier". I was in error it seems.
