Differences of opinion!
I just had MUSTACHE and WALLS HAVE EARS.

Thanks jolan - you've defeated me on the others.

Hi andyc
We were playing golf away at Longridge this morning - that's the match furthest away for me. We ummed and aahed for some time (even standing out in the rain for a while), but most of the players (16 a side) decided not to!
Monthly Medal tomorrow - forecast also poor.

I thought you would have used something other than "big" in the clue, but abigail is certainly an old maid.

Hi, also, to Ixion (haven't seen you for a while?), and AndyC (3/5). Jazzy (3/5) and ab (4/5).

Well ab, this is truly a rarity. I'll actually get to post (and justify) my workings.

Thanks a million all, for participating. Here goes:-

1. homophonic clue (called for) large alcoholic drink = a big ale; old = archaic; sounds like - ABIGAIL (archaic) = a lady’s maid (Chambers def)

2. say = e.g; nothing = o; initially tasteless = t; rip = to criticise severely (Chambers def). eg + o + t + rip = EGO-TRIP = inflates one's good opinion of oneself (Chambers def)

3. has to be painful = must ache; MUSTACHE = US spelling of ‘moustache’. walrus = a walrus moustache (Chambers def)

4. prison = chokey (or choky); children = ch (chambers abbrev); + sin (v) = err; ending up in (putting in); choke(ch + err)y = CHOKECHERRY = fruit (see Chambers – a single word)

5. dons = wears; all = the whole (Chambers def); shave = crop (Chambers & Ox Thes’i); dons conceal the whole crop = w(all + shave)ears = WALLS HAVE EARS = someone may be listening (Chambers def).

Well done Ari. I fully agree.

Meant to put a LARGE drink, but in my haste to get my computer sorted out, "big" just slipped in. I'd never normally use the same word in clue & answer.

Ta
