Thanks for these, Jolan. Challenging and enjoyable as always.
Here is my tentative stab at them. (very tentative in the case of number one)
1. Old maid called for a big alcoholic drink (7) – Very dubious- KOUMISS?? (“Called for” Coo, Miss (old maid) gives koumiss- alcoholic drink of fermented mare’s milk?)
2. Say nothing (initially tasteless) to criticise severely, it inflates one's good opinion of oneself. (3-4)-EGO TRIP? (Eg – say + o- nothing, with t (first letter of tasteless) and rip- criticise – ego trip- inflates one's good opinion of oneself)
3. Has to be painful for a US type of walrus?- MUSTACHE? (8) ( US spelling of Moustache – type of walrus, also “must ache”- has to be painful)
4. Fruit of children with sin ending up in prison (11)- CHOKECHERRY? (Prison – chokey with ch- children and err- sin inside gives “choke ch err y” – a fruit)
5. Dons conceal the whole crop as someone may be listening (5,4,4)- WALLS HAVE EARS? (Dons- wears, with “all” - the whole and “shave” – crop, gives “ w all shave ears” – someone may be listening)
Thanks again,
AB
