Thanks, sudokulover - my post got cut short as I was called away. I'm glad you were able to give more help than I'd provided.

Came late to this one. Disappointing - like a slightly dull Speccie, particularly after I'd thought the theme would involve the Ant / Ampt Hill Mob at all. Can't quite work out the pairings but the unchecked letters seem to work So that'll do.

Still not really happy with all the pairings, but there we are, if that's all we can do..................Thank you all for your very helpful assistance!

I'm afraid I don't see the pairings so far.

I think I see foot R's at 1a and last down,
Ethnic R's at r4 (hopefully the g variant) and c4,
A two word road r at 7d and a two word horse r at 16d.

That leaves a road r and a horse r for r3 and r8. But I can't work out what they are.

tomsdad: if I u'stood the suggestions on here correctly at all, some see a quite different pairing in the 3rd & 4th rows concerning a quite different meaning of "r". I am very dubious about that, since it leaves a horse r with a car r together as a pair (apart from eanything else). If no-one comes up with a better explanation I suppose that"s what I'll have to go along with, but I am still very sceptical.
