Getting nowhere. I have half the across answers but only half a dozen down answers.
Any hints on 12 D please? I think this might help break block.

Many thanks to both of you. As there are more across answers than cells available per row I'm guessing that they overlap in some way? Or behave like a snake?

Yes to both your ideas! The 'like a snake' bit is crucial for entering the answers. Once you've got a couple in, it really does get much easier.

So, do the across answers stay in rows, or maybe go up or down?

The snake moves in a direction until it hits the edge of the grid then turns round like a swimmer does at the end of a length!

Thanks again, will have to think about that. Are any of the answers actual snakes?

On row seven I can see a word beginning with D surrounded by a word beginning with S that doubles back.
