First two words are definition. Veg with a bit missing in the middle plus papers of a kind.

I'm totally baffled by 15 across. I'd also be grateful for a nudge on 38 across.

15, replace alternate letters of Proust with first letters, h-i-m. Middle letter of answer "leaves".

38 big band music = salsa, replace answer to #2 with Latin meaning "the same". Last letter of answer "leaves".

Thanks, Kilgore Trout. But I am still stuck on 11, 33 and 40 across and 29 and 30 down. Is the removed letter in 19 W?

In 30d, salad leaf is the definition. It's a mix of some letters in bacteriostatic.

I don't see how it can be the W as it's not one of the 6 letters that have to be changed. Must be the J but I don't know if it goes to the side or is part of the "description of the thematic setting". I have the activities, the nature of the theme, the geographical location, but am having trouble with 11ac, 13ac, 15ac (don't see how it fits the definition), 23ac, 37ac , 1dn (have the word, but can;t see how the clue works, and 29. All this means I think I know what is in the two side columns but I can't source the letters properly.

Barretter, in 1d, the first 4 letters are the first letters of a word that means "sponger". The last 3 are the first letters of a word meaning "betrayed".
I'm stuck on the same other ones as you, as well as a few in the top right corner.
I'd love a hint on 5 a to get me going again, please.
