Here is a question rather than a helpful contribution : Are all answers opened at the closing date or is there some advantage in submitting an early entry ?
Anyway - "a merry Christmas every one".
PS hints already given above helped me to solve the carol anagrams

Hi truron.
I have no idea but have always imagined that on the given day a secretary gives the sack(s) a shake and then plunges her/his hand in to pick the lucky winner. I suspect that late entries have a slight advantage. I was a lucky winner a week or so ago after many years of trying. I hope you enjoyed the Christmas special as much as I did.

Thanks Farr for that comment. It is as I had hoped it might be. My query arose because I was beginning to think that the Law of Averages has been defied after some years of correct solutions being reluctant to pop out of the bag. I must try sticky envelopes. It has been a particularly enjoyable puzzle this Christmas. Fortunately completed in time to allow space for Christmas chores and festivities. Congrats on your win.
