I've finished this, but wonder whether anyone else thought there was an overlap in the Part 5 left-hand clue. I have one answer that means "meadow by river" and another that's a certain river. I supposed that the setter was just using "meadow" as the definition rather than the more accurate one. Was I mistaken? All the fodder's accounted for.

Many thanks Greedy Kite for your help on this one. I wouldn't have got anywhere without it! I still can't get the two vertical carols (8d & 9d) even after googling carols and gone through every line beginning with ?h and ?s. I would love to be able to finish this excellent xword so could you please give me one further hint as to how to find them. Thanks

8d is a carol I hadn't heard of

First word is O (which may have led to your difficulty) last word is 5 letters beginning with s which means grief/trouble

9d is to do with wise men and what they brought. Last word 4 letters- meaning unusual- starts with r.

8d is a variant line from a very common Christmas carol (at least it's different from the way we sing it in the US). 9d is from what's usually considered an Epiphany carol.

Sorry, dj. Didn't see your post; I'd lost the site for ten minutes.
Re 8d: The last (six-letter) word got me there.
