I'm finding this one really difficult, and I've still 5 left on the RHS.

Any suggestions for 13d please?

I agree with the O and L but not sure, as yet, about the R. I have S as the penultimate letter. Still cannot help on this clue. More coffee is needed.

Thanks both - I had ROAD as the naval base (ROD around A) - nearly right (roads is the correct term)

Malone beat me to it :) I now has a naval base as the answer to 22a (different type of "stick" )

Done now, thanks. I hadn't realised that the golf spelling of 8a isn't the same as the spelling for the other part of the clue.

16a - last one in - is very clever!
