I'm going mad re 1 ac. I have d, r and e + c or a. but can't fit those into any word that fits the clue. Can I have gone wrong somewhere?
I'm also struggling with top right and bottom left corners. Help with 33, 35 and 47, and with 9, 16 and 20 would be appreciated.

1a is a Spenserian word meaning to be brave. Bishop is RR.

For 47a, you need to put a Q into the clue for it to make sense. It then indicates an anagram.

I think that the missing 14 letters from the clues just added an unnecessary complication without providing anything interesting or useful. It tipped the balance from what would have been a satisfying challenge into a slog.

1ac doesn't have a "c". 33ac has most of the letters of a word for an Hawaiian ("Maui") outhouse inside "p" and "r" ("price") to give a word meaning "flat" in a technical sense. I still haven't solved a majority of the clues so any hint as to the theme would be welcome

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I have very few letters in either column though I assume there is a "poem" in column 12?

Ah, a closer look shows it's a female American writer with a sharp tongue. Thanks

And I know where she hung out, so that accounts for the 14 letters - just have to figure out where they fit!
