No, the preamble specifically states that bars are optional which is very generous really - I had a complete grid fill with 12 shape clues still unsolved.

I still haven't solved 11 of the shapes but have mostly filled the grid apart from the first part of 5 across (can't find a plastic ending in L) and the second part of 11 (some sort of homophone?) - any hints most welcome. I also have the side-kick and the sobriquet but am puzzled how the character's name fits in the left-hand column. There seems to be an anomaly in the bottom 3 squares if they form part of "shape" no. 5. I presume the top 3 squares are the first part of the sobriquet?

barretter, I'm not sure what anomaly you've found; I haven't noticed anything amiss. In 5a (i) the answer ends in L, but the plastic begins with it. 11a (ii) is a straightforward homophone based on a common virus.
Although I haven't quite finished, I can say that you're wrong in your assumption about where the character's name goes.

Thanks very much Dryden. Your hint about 5 contradicts Djawhufc's hint but is obviously correct as I have now found the obscure alcohol and the rather ancient plastic. I see what you mean about the positioning of the character's name but it seems an odd way of entering the sobriquet. I assumed it would be continuous : comes from not having solved all the "shapes".

Hi

Perhaps my hint wasn't clear but I meant it was a four letter alcohol ending in L

Sorry

I have now completed the grid, although haven't worked out all the shape answers. I am only stuck on 10a. A hint would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Djawhufc, that's fine, your other hints were very useful and my last night's post was mistaken in a worse way.
