demeter, fifth clue has two misprints, one in 'coaxed' and one in 'idea'. The answer begins with the container part of the clue, "and admiiting old" followed by a jumble. You can probably work it out from there.

Still getting almost nowhere.

I presume that the acrosses can be in either order (where there are 2 of them), and that the correct letters for the Shapes clues can apply to either half of the clue (where they split into 2 four letter ones)? Just seems to allow so many possibilities.

I've got WALLATERSE
IODOUSNOES
for the first 2 across rows (above the bottom one, of course).

Is this right, at least?

I think they go in in the order of the clues. I am at about the same stage as you and those two rows seem to work in that order. That gives me a thematic name at the bottom which I can't work in with anything else!

Should have said 'what could be a thematic name'

What do you see as the definition for IODOUS?

Agree with those answers, though can't really see the wordplay for TERSE ('essentially having time for power').

From right to left along the bottom row the blocks belong to clues 1 (O), 2 (I), 3(i) (I), 3(ii) (O), 4 (L), 5(i) (S) and 5(ii) (T). The character's sidekick then appears on the bottom row.
